The shower is rinsed off all the time, doesn’t that mean it never gets dirty? If only that were true. But the shower needs to be cleaned at least once a week. Cleaning shower walls is neither difficult nor time-consuming, especially if you do it regularly so that not much dirt builds up between times.

Now we will share our best tips on how to clean the shower. They are:

1. Prevent dirt by using a squeegee after every shower.

2. Use acid-based cleaner and washing-up liquid.

3. Apply the cleaner with a cloth or spray bottle.

4. Rub, rinse, squeegee and wipe off.

Sounds simple? Feel free to read a bit more about each tip below to learn more about why this is the best way to clean the shower. We also give tips on how to clean shower walls that are really dirty.

Prevent dirt after every shower

One of the best ways to prevent your shower enclosure or your shower walls from getting dirty is to use a squeegee to remove most of the water from the glass or wall after each shower. This is both environmentally friendly and quick to do.

It keeps the shower fresh between cleanings and prevents ugly water spots.

But how can dirt and limescale build up on the glass, shouldn’t the water just run off?

Glass may appear perfectly smooth to the naked eye, but it has tiny, tiny pores that can catch both one thing and another.

When you squeegee away the water, you reduce the amount of deposits that accumulate. If you don’t have a squeegee at home, it is also fine to use a towel and wipe away the worst.

Choose the right cleaner for the shower walls

To clean shower walls effectively, you need a cleaner with a low pH value, i.e. an acid, as it breaks down limescale.

You can, for example, use bathroom sprays from the supermarket or items you have in the cupboard mixed with water such as vinegar, lemon or citric acid. Warm water is needed for the citric acid.

You can also add a few drops of washing-up liquid which dissolves soap and other dirt and makes the glass sparkling clean.

It is important not to use cleaners with abrasives or grains because they can scratch the glass. This usually doesn’t show after a single use, but regular use can make the glass duller.

How to clean shower walls

To avoid spots, it might be smart to apply the cleaner with a cloth and spread it evenly over the glass or shower wall.

If you spray, the cleaner might miss some areas. But if your shower isn’t very dirty, the spray bottle can make the process easier.

Let it work for a while, but not long enough to dry. Rub well with a microfiber cloth or with a cleaning sponge with a white surface, i.e. one without abrasives.

After that, rinse off and squeegee the water from the glass. Feel free to wipe the edges with a towel for the finishing touch.

How to clean really dirty shower doors

But what if your shower doors are super dirty and nothing works?

If the glass in the shower hasn’t been cleaned for several months or even years, you might need a heavier arsenal. But that doesn’t mean you have to resort to strong chemicals.

It’s enough to spray the glass with vinegar mixed with water. Then you can use a click squeegee to remove limescale deposits.

It doesn’t damage the glass and is sometimes used to remove, for example, paint splashes from window glass or burnt food from stove tops.

Here you can see the difference it makes!

Don’t forget the seals on the shower doors

You might forget about the rubber seals when cleaning shower walls, but quite a lot of dirt can accumulate there.

Feel free to use a toothbrush to clean where you can reach. Washing-up liquid usually works well to get them clean. Wipe along the seals with a damp cloth, both on the outside and the inside.

Sometimes mould and other dirt can collect inside, between the glass and the seal, and it can be difficult to get to clean. In some cases, you may need to replace the seals.
