Cleaning shower walls in the bathroom will never be difficult again
One might easily think that the shower basically cleans itself. After all, you stand there all day long rinsing water and soap on it! Yet, somehow the shower still gets dirty, and if you don't clean the shower walls regularly, limescale deposits and mould will appear as if on command. But how should you really clean the shower to make it really, really clean?
Here are our very best tips to clean shower walls, tiles and grout in the best way!
One way to clean the shower in a bathroom is to do a quick tidy-up after each time you have showered. You can check to see that shampoo and other products haven’t splashed up onto the walls or doors.
You can also keep a spray bottle in the shower with some cleaning product or vinegar diluted with water.
You can use ICA's own brand if you are shopping there anyway.
Quickly spray the glass doors and tiles and then use a window squeegee to remove the worst before rinsing with the shower spray to get rid of the residues.
Another tip is to also scrape the floor to ensure there are no puddles of water that can harbour bacteria. Remember that mould thrives in damp environments, so the more water you remove, the better.
If you have a shower curtain, make sure the length is right, i.e., just above the bathroom floor. Besides this, it’s important to wash the shower curtain in the washing machine from time to time and to let it dry properly stretched out. If the shower curtain is left hanging together after each shower, it will go mouldy and then you’ll have to buy a new one.
The glass on shower doors can easily become limescale-covered and look a bit cloudy, even when you haven’t recently showered. But this is easy to fix.
Mix washing-up liquid and vinegar together with water and spray on the doors and let stand for a few minutes.
Then use a washing-up sponge without abrasive (with a white underside) to scrub the doors clean. Finish by rinsing with the shower spray.
Don’t forget to occasionally clean the outside of the shower doors as well. You can do this with a cloth and window cleaner as they won’t be nearly as dirty.
Also clean the knobs/handles on the shower doors as you touch these every day.
Another product you can use, which is not an environmentally friendly option, is Kalkosan. You must absolutely not use this if you have marble or other sensitive materials in the bathroom.
But if you have ordinary tiles, you can effectively use this. First wet the shower walls with warm water. Then apply Kalkosan on the shower walls with a spray bottle and the correct dilution. (It is stated on the bottle).
Before doing all this you must, of course, put on long gloves and protective goggles so that it does not come into contact with eyes or skin.
After the product has had effect on the shower walls you can scrub them with a white scouring sponge. You don’t need to press hard; be gentle and systematic in your movements and your shower walls will look like new.
It’s important to know that shower walls may require repeated cleaning attempts to remove all the tiles. Especially if it has been there for a long time. In some cases, it is actually so that it cannot be removed and then you either have to live with it or replace the shower walls in the bathroom.
Tile grout can be a nightmare to get clean if you haven’t cleaned it for a long time, so we strongly recommend keeping on top of these so that mould never forms.
But if your tile grout looks ugly and mouldy, there are either special cleaning foams for tiles you can spray on and let work or you can use a paste made of baking powder and water.
Then all you need is a toothbrush and patience!
Even when you clean tile grout you can use Kalkosan for a good result.
The bath should be cleaned at least once a week, but of course more often if you bathe in it. For hygiene’s sake, you should clean it both before and after bathing. Sure, it spoils the spa feeling a bit, but it’s simply necessary so you don’t bathe in dirty water.
If you know you want to have a nice bath when you get home from work, why not clean the bath in the morning so that it’s ready for you when you get home?
It’s not particularly difficult to clean a bath. What you must think about is to avoid bathroom cleaners and scouring sponges that have abrasive properties, but otherwise it’s hard to do wrong. Usually, scouring cream is what has abrasive properties.
Start by rinsing the bath so it’s wet, it’s easier to scrub then. Then you can sprinkle a little soap here and there and use a sponge (or dish brush if you don’t want to bend down so much) to scrub the whole bath.
Don’t forget on the edges and around the taps. Then just rinse off the soap with warm water and voilà – you have a clean bath!
If you have limescale deposits and dirt that are hard to remove, you can preferably use vinegar that you let soak a bit before scrubbing the stains. If there’s a lot, you may need to do this several times, but eventually you will see results, you’ll see.
1. Most people remember to clean the tiles, shower doors and floor occasionally, but there are actually other things in the shower that need cleaning regularly.
2. Don’t forget to clean the following things next time:
3. Shampoo bottles and other products. A cloth with a little soap and a rinse freshens these up easily.
4. Taps. Use window cleaner to get them really shiny and clean.
5. Showerhead. To clean the showerhead, use a sponge with soap to scrub it clean and finish by putting a plastic bag over the showerhead and turn on the water. This way all the little gaps get clean too. Don’t forget to clean exactly where the showerhead sits in its holder when not in use, as mould can form there sometimes. Also clean inside the holder.
6. Floor drain. To clean the floor drain, it’s good to use cleaning agents and a white scrubbing sponge to reach and remove hair and grime that have stuck there. Also scrub under and around the cover itself.
7. Rubber seals on shower doors. Clean where you can reach and preferably use a toothbrush to get under the edge on the seals where dirt may have accumulated. This doesn’t need to be done very often. If cleaning the rubber seals isn’t enough, you can easily order new ones via, for example, bygghemma.se.
8. Ventilation. If there is a bathroom fan or similar over the shower, you should wipe away dust that collects around the opening. Sometimes you may also need to open the fan and wipe the blades.
9. Bathroom squeegee. We often use a squeegee to remove water from the floor and keep it clean – but how clean is the squeegee itself? Give it a quick wash so bacteria don’t spread every time you use it.
