A good coffee maker is essential in many homes. A good cup of coffee sets the tone for the rest of the day and helps you get through everyday life.

Nowadays, there is a large variety of coffee machines with different smart features to choose from, and many good buying guides to help you choose the right coffee machine for your needs.

A very popular coffee machine today is Moccamaster, which tops many best-rated lists. Besides its sleek, streamlined design, it ensures that the coffee is brewed and served at the right temperature for the best coffee experience.

Because of this smart temperature control system, it can take a little longer to brew the coffee, but it is worth it.

No matter how good a coffee machine you buy, there are some things you need to do to take care of it. There is hardly anything worse than discovering a strange aftertaste in your morning coffee. This is usually due to limescale deposits inside the coffee maker.

When did you last clean your Moccamaster? If you are one of those who prefers to wait as long as possible, we have good news – it is easier than you think to clean a Moccamaster. Join us and learn more about cleaning your Moccamaster!

Why do you need to spend time and energy cleaning your coffee maker?

There are several benefits to regularly cleaning your coffee machine by descaling it. The coffee tastes better, stays at the right temperature, and the coffee machine is quieter when running. Moreover, your coffee machine lasts much longer when you take care of it.

You might also wonder how limescale ends up in the water in the first place. Depending on where you live, there is more or less calcium and magnesium in the drinking water. A high level of these minerals means the water is hard, and a low level characterises soft water. These minerals cause limescale deposits when the water is heated.

Additionally, some limescale is added to the water to prevent rust formation in the water pipes. This is, of course, good for the infrastructure but bad for your coffee maker. When the water is heated in the coffee machine, it leads to limescale deposits in the machine’s pipes and prevents it from functioning optimally.

In other words, you have a lot to gain by regularly cleaning your Moccamaster.

Step-by-step guide for Moccamaster cleaning

Cleaning the Moccamaster is a much quicker and easier process than you think. There are also eco-friendly options you can use for cleaning your coffee maker, such as using vinegar as a descaling agent.

Vinegar has a low pH value, making it very effective at dissolving limescale.

You need:

200 ml vinegar 24%

600 ml cold water

Do as follows:

  1. Pour 200 ml vinegar and 600 ml water into the water container of the coffee maker.
  2. Turn on the coffee machine and let all the liquid run through. Repeat once if it has been several months since you last cleaned it.
  3. Then fill the water container with clean water and let it run through. Repeat twice to completely remove the vinegar.

Cleaning the coffee maker with a special descaling agent

If you do not want to use vinegar for descaling the coffee maker, there are special descaling agents intended for coffee machines that you can use instead. For Moccamaster cleaning, Moccamaster’s own descaling agent is recommended.

It is completely odourless and therefore does not give any strange aftertaste to the coffee. A 1-litre bottle can be used 3 times.

Here is how you do it:

  1. Pour 1 litre of descaling agent into the water container.
  2. Place a coffee filter in the filter holder and turn on the coffee machine.
  3. Let half of the liquid run through and then turn off the coffee maker.
  4. Let it stand for about 30 minutes, then turn the machine on again and let the rest of the liquid run through.
  5. Then fill the water container with clean water and let it run through. Repeat twice to completely remove the descaling agent.
  6. Allow the liquid to cool completely before pouring it back into the bottle for next use.
  7. Done!

How often you should clean the coffee machine depends on several factors. First and foremost, the hardness of the water determines this. It also depends on how often you use your coffee machine – the more often the machine’s pipes are filled with limescale-rich water, the more limescale deposits there will be.

As a rule, a thorough cleaning of the coffee maker is recommended every 40th brew if you live in an area with hard water, such as Malmö. If the water is soft where you live, it may be sufficient to descale the coffee machine every four months instead.
