Few materials are as beautiful and timeless as marble. It is a true classic and a popular choice in many trendy homes.
Marble is a beautiful but quite delicate natural material. It is much more porous than other natural stones and therefore requires a lot of care. We will teach you how to properly care for your marble so that it stays beautiful for many years! Among other things, we cover which cleaning products should be used and which should be avoided when cleaning marble from dirt and stains.
1. Lemon-based or acidic cleaning products
Our very best tip when it comes to caring for marble surfaces is to avoid acidic cleaning products. The acid in these products can etch and stain the stone, and it only takes one occasion to ruin your beautiful marble.
2. Vinegar
Eco-friendly cleaning with vinegar has become incredibly popular in recent years. However, vinegar is the last thing you should use to clean marble. It is acidic and corrosive and can damage the marble surface beyond repair.
Something that lemon and vinegar can work wonders on is another material often combined with marble – namely brass. Here we share our best tips for making brass look like new.
1. Wipe up liquid immediately
Have you accidentally spilled something on your marble slab? Then it’s very important that you try to remove the liquid right away. This applies to everything from coffee to plain water. Yes, even water leaves ugly stains and can ruin the entire appearance of the marble slab.
Moreover, some liquids such as wine, vinegar and sparkling water can even damage marble, so make sure to remove these as quickly as possible.
Avoid placing glasses directly on the marble as much as you can. It’s easy to miss liquid on the underside of the glass which then leads to ugly water rings on the marble. Therefore, always use coasters – it makes life (and cleaning) so much easier.
2. Water and cleaning sponge for stains
The simplest stains can often be removed with lukewarm water and a cleaning sponge. Ideally, the stain should be treated as soon as it appears.
Dampen the sponge and then scrub the stains. Be careful not to scrub too hard – it can damage the material. Then simply dry the surface with a dry microfiber cloth.
3. Remove water stains with baking soda
If water stains don’t come off by scrubbing with a damp sponge as in the tip above, it may be worth giving this simple household trick a chance. Namely, cleaning with baking soda.
Mix about 2 parts baking soda with one part water until it forms a thick paste. Spread the paste over the stain, leave it for about 5 minutes and then wipe it off with a damp, clean cloth.

4. Green soap cleans and protects marble
Regular green soap is an effective and safe product for cleaning marble surfaces. It has a neutral pH which makes it suitable for marble cleaning as it neither scratches nor discolours marble. The fat in the soap also seals the pores of the marble and protects it. Talk about effective cleaning!
