How often do you clean your coffee maker? Most of us don't do it often enough. But a limescale-filled coffee maker can affect the taste of the coffee, so it's good to descale it now and then. And it's easier than you think to clean the coffee maker with vinegar.
1. Pour 2 decilitres of 24% vinegar and 6 decilitres of water into the water reservoir.
2. Turn on the coffee maker and let it run through. Repeat if necessary.
3. Brew clean water three times to completely remove the vinegar.
It's that simple! But what about if you have a coffee maker from Moccamaster?
Well, these coffee makers work the same way as all other filter coffee machines and can therefore be cleaned in the same way.
There is indeed a special descaling agent that you usually get with the machine and that they recommend, but the fact is that using vinegar works just as well.
You can use vinegar to descale your coffee maker and kettle because it has such a low pH value. This means it effectively dissolves limescale.
Moreover, it is not harmful to ingest if a little remains in the coffee by chance. (It's no more dangerous than eating a bit of pickled onion.)
You can also use vinegar to clean your kettle, and you can use the same measurements as when descaling the coffee maker.
But there's another common ingredient you may have at home in the cupboard that works just as well. Read more about it in the post Cleaning the kettle – in two minutes!
Of course, limescale can build up not only inside the coffee maker. If you see white spots that are difficult to remove from any of the coffee maker's removable parts, you can place them in a bowl or basin with 2 parts vinegar, 6 parts water. Let them soak for a good while before washing them.
For limescale stains on the coffee maker itself, you can try putting a little vinegar on a washing-up sponge and scrubbing. Choose a sponge with a white scouring side that has no abrasive that could scratch the surface.
