Who wouldn't appreciate having a clean and nice bed to crawl into after a long day? If you have small children or pets at home, you probably have a mattress that could benefit from being freshened up a bit. Moreover, we humans tend to sweat quite a bit at night, which also affects the condition of the mattress.
It's almost a bit ironic that something we use daily gets so little attention when it comes to cleaning day. The truth is that most of us do not clean the mattress very often, if at all. We want to change that! Follow along and learn how to clean a mattress quickly and easily.
It may sound disgusting, but mattresses contain dust mites, dust, dirt, dead skin cells, and even various types of stains. This is completely natural – after all, we use the mattress for a third of the day.
However, this does not mean you should neglect the mattress. A dirty mattress that contains too many mites can cause allergic reactions in the person sleeping on it. Not very fresh, right?
This is reason enough to get started cleaning your mattress today.
If instead you need to clean your sofa, you can read our blog post about smart ways to clean your sofa.
1. Vacuum the mattress regularly
An easy thing that can make a big difference for your mattress topper is to vacuum the mattress regularly. Preferably every time you change the sheets. If there is one cleaning habit to start this year, we think this takes the prize! It doesn't even take five minutes, and suddenly the mattress feels much fresher.
2. Use mattress cleaner
If the mattress feels very dirty, it might be a good idea to use a special mattress cleaning product. These products reduce the number of mites in the mattress and inhibit potential mould growth.
3. Eco-friendly stain removal with bicarbonate of soda
A very popular home remedy is to use bicarbonate of soda to remove old urine stains. This also works on other dried stains, such as old sweat stains.
Before you start treating the stains, vacuum the mattress thoroughly.
Mix a bicarbonate paste with ¾ bicarbonate and ¼ water. Spread the paste on the stains to be treated and let it work for at least an hour, preferably longer. When the time is up, the paste should have dried so you can easily vacuum it up. And presto, all the ugly yellow stains are gone! Just remember to let the mattress dry completely before making the bed.
4. Remove new stains quickly
With children and puppies in the bed, a urine accident is easily done. The good news is that when it comes to newer stains, it is even easier to clean the mattress. However, you must act quickly.
Soak up as much liquid as you can using kitchen paper or a clean towel. Then sprinkle a generous layer of bicarbonate over the stain. Let it work for at least an hour, preferably a little longer. After that, you can vacuum up all the bicarbonate. Let the mattress dry completely before making the bed. The mattress should now be clean again.
When it comes to urine stains, it can be a good idea to mix a few drops of essential oil with the bicarbonate before sprinkling it over the bed. Lavender and lemon usually smell fresh and help prevent a foul smelling mattress.
5. Mattress protector to prevent accidents
The easiest way to avoid having to wash the entire mattress when an accident occurs is to invest in a good waterproof mattress protector. IKEA, for example, has an affordable mattress protector that keeps the mattress dry. The mattress protector is much easier to put in the washing machine than the mattress topper and also protects against dirt.
After following these steps, all your mattresses at home should be stain-free and pleasantly scented. Now you can relax knowing that your mattress is truly clean.
